Mirror, Mirror on The Wall

I spotted this beautiful photograph on Daniella’s blog and fell in love instantly.  If it were possible to take this vignette and insert it into my own interior, I would.  I would only change one thing: that lampshade.  Granted there’s nothing wrong with it – my reasoning is simply personal preference.  I rarely like bell or chimney-shaped lampshades for myself. Nine times out of ten I’m a drum shade girl!  Still, this photograph is dreamy.  I love the Polaroid pictures taped to the mirror… it really lends itself to a casual, effortless glamour.

I’ve noticed that is something I really like: spaces that appear to have come together effortlessly and over time.

I’m really starting to hone my personal design style.  The Design Book project that I am completing for my Interior Design Seminar class has proven to be a worthwhile exercise of examining myself as an interior designer.  After scouring hundreds of images and tear-sheets, to uncover 24 distinct photographs to represent my personality and style is amazing.  It’s really interesting to see all of these random threads of inspirations come together to create an entire aesthetic that is, essentially, unique to me.

I think it’s one thing to tear an image out of magazine because “we like it,” and it’s entirely another thing to actually examine this photograph and determine what it is that we like or even what works and doesn’t.  I’m guilty of tearing out or saving images that look “pretty” and then not looking at them again until I accidentally stumble upon them.  Usually when this happens I can’t even remember why I saved it.  Is anyone else “guilty” of this?

At any rate, I’d be happy to share pages from my Design Book when it’s finished (about a month from now) if any of you are curious! Just let me know.

I’d love to see it! I think it would be fun to see! I’m thinking about making one myself. What a great idea…

That’s what I really love about school-when you’re forced to find out more about yourself and style and learn in an organic way.

I used to be guilty of exactly that – earmarking magazines, and not knowing why – then I began to cut out pages and tape them into a notebook, and write what I liked about them (with a date) – It is fun to go back through these design scrapbooks and see my trends.
Now I find myself grabbing photos off the web and posting them in the forums section of my website – with a note – and then seeing what other people like.
