Marcel Breuer + Atlanta

My friend, Claire, recently wrote an excellent post about the Atlanta – Fulton Public Library which just so happens to be Marcel Breuer’s last project. It also happens to be on the chopping block.
Claire writes, “The library exists as a prime example of the Brutalist style. The building can also be found on the World Monuments Fund because architecture lovers everywhere fear the city will vacate the building. After all ‘Brutalism’ is a scary sounding word. Maybe that’s the reason the city wants it gone.”
Maybe. I’ll sit here right now and admit that I’m rarely a fan of the Brutalist style, but I’m a big supporter of historic preservation. I didn’t hesitate one second before signing the petition to save the library (I’m one of the first 30 people to do so). Silly Atlanta needs to stop tearing down architecture of note.
Sure, the interior could use a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, or even new pieces of furniture thrown in with a few of their original pieces, but the architecture really stands alone here. It doesn’t need much… just a little enhancing. I mean, just look at those skylights! I think they’re amazing.

If you’re in Atlanta be sure to not only visit the library itself, but visit MODA’s exhibition on Marcel Breuer as well. Thank you, Claire, for bringing more attention to this issue. I couldn’t help but spread the word a little more!

I am not that in tune with the arts of Atlanta, nor architecture and design for that matter. But, I see that it is imperative for Atlanta to keep significant buildings around. One reason I may be out of touch with the arts is because this city (in which I grew up in) is detached from them because of political and economic incentives. Take Portland. It has a cultural materialism much different than Atlanta. If Atlanta has a cultural materialism that isn’t in fact just plain industrialism. Atlanta has hip-hop…yeah, anyways. We are very detached from the arts. Which is a shame. The arts are very nurturing. Maybe I’m just out of the loop though. Maybe there is an extensive arts culture in Atlanta.
But I will confidently state that Atlanta is much more focused on industrialization than cultural materialism.
